Equipment for space heating and DHW from Baxi Commercial has helped this new school building achieve a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating.

Baxi Commercial Division has supplied a pre-fabricated packaged boiler plant, solar-thermal hot-water system and a wall-hung continuous-flow water heater for the new 2-storey science and IT block at Bryn Alyn School in Wrexham, Wales. This project is part of a £20 million investment programme for three schools in Wrexham. Designed to minimise environmental impact, the new building employs a number of sustainable technologies and has a BREEAM ranting of ‘Excellent’.

This comprehensive school for 11 to 16-year olds has about 800 students. Building services for the new block were designed by URS.

Space heating via underfloor and perimeter systems is provided by a Sirius MB packaged boiler plant, with two Sirius 110 kW boilers. The package is a complete heating system that includes boilers, pumps, pressurisation system and heating controls. Packages are factory built and tested, with the only work required on site being assembling modules and connecting to services. Each module can pass through a standard doorway.

Also installed in the boiler room are an Andrews Water Heaters Solarflo cylinder and associated equipment, which are connected to the system’s solar panels on the flat roof. Water pre-heated by solar energy is supplied to a Fastflo wall-hung balanced-flue continuous-flow water heater which modulates its output to meet hot-water demand with a temperature accuracy within ±1 K and no standby heat losses.

The flat-plate collectors are Solar Key Mark Approved and, in common with the stainless-steel unvented cylinders and evacuated tubes in the Andrews range, carry a 10-year guarantee.

The WH56 water heater supplied has a maximum flow of 32 l/min through a temperature rise of 25 K and serves all the DHW requirements.
