Condensing boilers slash heating costs in Wigan

Potterton Commercial, boiler, space heating, maintenance, refurbishment
Heating energy use for Wigan Town Hall has fallen by 22% following the installation of five Potterton boilers in the upgraded heating system.

New condensing boilers for the heating system of Wigan Town Hall showed a 22% energy saving over the year to May 2012 compared to the previous year — despite the heating remaining operational to the end of May, compared to 2011 when it was switched off in early April.

The five Potterton Commercial Sirius 160 kW floor-standing condensing boilers were selected by consulting Engineers NPS North West in a joint venture with Wigan Metropolitan Borough Council. They replaced boilers that had reached the end of their operational life and which has become less efficient and reliable.

Access to the plant room was via weight-restricted stairs and lifts, so compact boilers (they can pass through a standard doorway and fit in a small lift) with low individual weights were needed. They were installed in the first-floor plant room by Hayman Mechanical Services.

The boilers service constant- and variable-temperature circuits serving fan convectors, air-handling units and radiators. New pipework was installed to each of the boilers, with the headers connected to a BEMS, which provides monitoring and control functions — including zone control.
