Baxi helps care home to reduce CO2 emissions
Baxi Commercial low-carbon technologies in a care home in Caerphilly include two Baxi-SenerTec mini-CHP units and solar water heating from Andrews Water Heaters to pre-heat domestic hot water. The services for Ty Penrhos were designed by McCann & Partners in accordance with operator Hafod Care’s requirements.
This 3-storey purpose-built care home houses 75 residents. It comprises six 10-bed care units for elderly residents with en-suite bathrooms and lounge/dining areas, as well as a separate, dedicated respite care centre for younger users.
The Dachs mini-CHP units act as lead boilers for the space-heating system. Each has an electrical output of 5.5 kW and a minimum heat output of 12.5 kW.
In the first year of operations the Dachs units ran for 3544 h and produced about 49 MWh of heat and 19.4 MWh of electricity. Heat from the Dachs system also contribute to the production of domestic hot water via a secondary coil in the solar heating cylinder. Pre-heated water is supply to two conventional 1800 l hot-water cylinders.
The solar-thermal system comprises four evacuated-tube collectors on the pitched roof. They supply heat to a 450 l twin-coil cylinders with destratification and anti-legionella functionality as standard.
The SolarFlo evacuated-tube collectors have a higher thermal efficiency than glazed flat-plate collectors and can operate at lower ambient temperatures.
