Traincare depot enjoys benefits of radiant heat

AmbiRad, Nor-Ray-Vac, radiant space heating
Replacement radiant heating has improved comfort and reduced costs in this traincare depot in Glasgow.

Gas-fired radiant heating has replaced a costly and ineffective oil-fired system at Polmadie Traincare centre in Glasgow. The system for the 10 000 m2 maintenance shed was supplied by AmbiRad and includes a Nor-Ray-Vac system with 61 burners and SmartCom controls. The depot services Virgin Pendolino trains.

Gradwood Heating carried out the installation, which also includes two AmbiRad Vision unit heaters and two UDSA warm-air heaters in 14 separate zone across the building’s primary maintenance area. The work was carried out while the depot was operating and included some 400 m of MDPE underground gas main beneath the tracks to take gas to the main depot.

The Nor-Ray-System is at a height of about 7 m.

With large, constantly open doors, train-maintenance sheds are difficult to heat and keep warm, which is where radiant heating comes into its own.

The payback of the new heating system is expected to be less than three years, and it qualifies for Enhanced Capital Allowances.
