25 years on for AMP

AMP, an independent air-conditioning distributor with its headquarters in Welwyn Garden City and branches in the Midlands and Bristol, is marking its silver-jubilee year with a substantial investment in training. All main centres have training facilities, and the company has pioneered with a strong emphasis on technical training.

Launched in 1989 by Polly McConachie and Martin Michaelson, the company has a turnover of £17 million a year and specialises in equipment from Toshiba, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Fujitsu.

Polly McConachie says, ‘Our approach from the beginning has been collaborative, underpinned with high-quality technical support. We believe this is the key to delivering successful projects for installers and clients.’

The move to Welwyn Garden City from north London was made in 2001, giving the company purpose-built offices, training room and warehouse.

The next step is a complete refurbishment of the dedicated Toshiba training centre for installers and field engineers at Welwyn Garden City. It will offer the recently expanded range of practical and theoretical courses launched by Toshiba.

AMP was appointed a Toshiba distributor in 2004 following the withdrawal of one of its key air-conditioning franchises — a major reversal and potential threat to the business. Since then, sales of the Toshiba brand have grown significantly.
