Bitzer delivers cooling for Sochi Winter Games

Bitzer, Sochi, winter Olympic games, compressor, air conditioning
The refrigeration and air-conditioning requirements of five stadiums at the Sochi Winter Olympic Games were met using Bitzer screw compressors.

Bitzer screw compressors played a key role in the refrigeration and air-conditioning systems delivered by Finnish manufacturer Suomen Tekojää Oy for five stadiums of the Olympic Winter Games at Sochi. Established in 1997, the company has built refrigeration systems for over a hundred ice rinks in Russia and around 500 worldwide.

The projects were as follows

• Shayba Arena: four CSH (ice surface) and six CSH compressors (air conditioning). ‘Shayba’ is the Russian word for the puck used in ice hockey.

• Ice-hockey training stadium: four CSH (ice surface) and two CSH compressors (air conditioning).

• Figure-skating training stadium: four CSH (ice surface) and two CSH compressors (air conditioning).

• Curling arena: three HSK (ice surface), three HSK (air conditioning) and three HSK compressors for either function.

• Bobsleigh training stadium: four CSH (ice surface).

To ensure that everything ran to plan, a back-up system was installed for each refrigeration system.
