Fire Design Solutions completes major Greenwich project

Fire Design Solutions, smoke ventilation
Smoke-ventilation systems for all 12 blocks of The Capital Quay development in Greenwich were designed and installed by Fire Design Solutions.

Fire Design Solutions has completed the installation of smoke-venting systems for the large-scale residential at New Capital Quay in London. The development comprises over a thousand dwellings — along with shops, offices, leisure facilities, underground parking and a health centre.

Working with developer Galliard Construction, FDS designed and installed a number of smoke-venting systems, including the FireSmart intelligent control system.

Despite the size of this development, the project was not delivered in phases, so FDS had to deliver across all 12 blocks within the same tight timescale.

The work involved designing, supplying, installing and commissioning mechanical smoke-venting systems in each block, along with corridor environment systems to alleviate the common issue of them overheating.

The BS 5839-compliant FireSmart control panel system provided a great deal of flexibility and simpler installation, as all fire systems were included in a single loop. FireSmart will produce status reports and commissioning logs, making it an integral part of the building’s ongoing fire plan.

Variations included a smoke-clearance system in the underground car-parking area of each block. Thrust ventilation will clear smoke quickly in the event of a fire.

Gerard Sheridan, chairman of FDS, said, ‘The key to the successful management and completion of this project was co-ordination with the developer, with whom we’ve worked before, and our fellow contractors.’
