Heat pumps serve luxury lodges

Dimplex, heat pump, renewable energy
Dimplex heat pumps deliver space heating and hot water for 10 lodges at the Celtic Manor Resort.

Energy-efficient space heating and hot water for 10 eco-friendly log houses at the 5-star Celtic Manor Resort near Newport in Wales are provided by Dimplex air-source heat pumps. Each lodge has four bedrooms and five bathrooms and can accommodate up to eight guests. They also have a sauna and outdoor Jacuzzi. Heating is by underfloor heating.

Rob Clarke of Lodgico, which specialises in designing and building custom timber homes, explains, ‘Log houses are energy efficient because the logs have the ability to absorb heat and release it back into the air when it becomes cooler inside. Additional insulation measures were also included on each property, including triple-glazed windows, but we knew that the heating-system design would be key to further maximise the energy performance of each lodge.’’

Dimplex designed a system that could be installed in all 10 lodges. It comprises an LA 16 MI air-source heat pump feeding underfloor heating and a 400 l unvented cylinders for DHW with a 150 l buffer vessel.

Dimplex and Lodgico worked with renewable-energy specialist RES (Devon) to ensure the smooth delivery of the heat-pump installation, commissioning and handover.

Dimplex carried out all necessary surveys, heat-loss calculations and designs for the heating system.

A Net Monitor system enables heating to be controlled centrally from the main hotel building.
