Mental-health unit opts for biomass heating

Supplied by Rural Energy, this 600 kW biomass boiler will provide heating for The Harbour mental-health facility in Blackpool.

Biomass heating plant supplied by Rural Energy will heat the new £40 million mental-health facility The Harbour in Blackpool. The system was chosen by Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust. The system is based on a Herz BioFire 600 kW boiler and the largest fuel store, 157 m3, and feed that Rural Energy has ever installed.

Not only will the facility’s energy bills be reduced, but there will be a significant income from the Renewable Heat Incentive.

Rural Energy worked with NG Bailey and filtration specialist Glosfume.

Glosfume’s ceramic filtration system removes particulates from the boiler emissions down to a level comparable with a gas boiler.

The Harbour has 154 bedrooms and will provide high-quality inpatient care to those recovering from mental-health issues.

The physical size of the biomass plant and the layout of the site required expert planning from Rural Energy and its partners. The design of the underground fuel store was particularly complex, with the three 5 m filling screws installed at low level to fully utilise the storage space in the bunker for wood chips. The large size of the fuel bunker will minimise the number of deliveries needed.
