Peel Group wins top energy-saving award

Peel Group, energy management

Peel Land & Property Group has been awarded energy-management status to ISO 50001, and says it is the first major property and management enterprise in the UK to receive the award. To secure this recognition, Peel had to meet strict criteria around an energy-management framework that seeks continuous improvement and clear performance targets. Annual savings from energy measures across the Peel portfolio since 2009 have passed £1 million.

Among the Peel premises to form part of the audit were MediaCityUK in Salford (pictured), EventCity in Manchester, Lowry Outlet in Salford and Gloucester Quays in Gloucester.

Tim Watts, operations manager for assurance with Lucideon, which carried out the audit, explained, ‘In the course of the 4-day onsite certification audit, it became plain to me that the energy-management system at Peel is a long-established process which has widespread support from the boardroom to the facilities teams. This was reflected in the considerable number of completed energy-efficient projects which I was able to observe during my visit and the professionalism and dedication of the staff involved.’

Peel’s strategy is aimed at benefitting occupiers directly through lower energy costs and a higher-quality working environment.

The group’s commitment to sustainability at MediaCityUK was highlighted by BREEAM in 2011, when the development was awarded the title of the first sustainable community in the world. Innovative measures include tri-generation power plant to help heat, cool and power buildings on the development.
