CHP engine lands at Scarborough Hospital

Scarborough Hospital’s campaign to achieve substantial energy savings has been boosted by the delivery of a 776 kW(e) CHP engine to power the new low-carbon energy system. When finished, the system will deliver over £500 000 in energy savings a year and reduce CO2 emissions by over 2100 t a year.

Vital Energi designed and installed the system and provided the hospital with an energy-performance contract that guarantees a minimum level of savings over a 15-year period.

The 28 t CHP engine is in an acoustic enclosure to reduce nose. It arrived by road and was craned into a temporary overnight storage place before manoeuvred into position with just 50 mm to spare to its location inside the energy-centre compound.

The project was procured through the Carbon & Energy Fund, which helps hospitals to deliver projects that dramatically reduce energy costs and carbon emissions. The Scarborough project will also see 1238 light fittings upgraded, along with the building-management systems.

The work at Scarborough is part of a joint contract with York Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust that will also involve Vital carrying out upgrades at Bridlington & District Hospital. They will include a 238 kW(e) gas-fired CHP engine, three boilers, upgrades to over 1500 lighting fittings and the building management system. Guaranteed savings are over £2.2 million and 10 000 t of carbon over the 15-year contract.
