Chiller delivers heating and cooling at same time

Klima-Therm, Rhoss, chilled water, hot water, air conditioning, space heating

Simultaneous chilled water and hot water from a Rhoss heat-pump chiller provides air conditioning, heating and domestic hot water for Northbrook College’s West Durington Campus. It was installed as part of a £6.6 million project to transform the campus. The work included a new 3-storey learning centre and entrance area with exhibition space, high-tech library, seminar rooms and a refectory. There is also a new drama block.

The heat-pump chiller was supply by Klima-Therm and installed by Maybourne &Russell.

M&E Consultant HamsonJPA chose the chiller for the significant potential energy savings that could be delivered. Analysis of load profiles for the new building showed that for much of the year there would be a simultaneous requirement for heating and cooling.

The chiller combines three core technologies — a heat-pump-based chiller, an energy and heat-recovery system and a control system to regulate and optimise the functions of the combined system across a building to minimise energy consumption.

Individual heat exchangers for chilled water and hot water are connected separately to the relevant pipework circuit.

Tony Farhall of Maybourne & Russell, said, ‘We worked closely with Klima-Therm, our consultants and the client to ensure the requirements of the project brief were delivered. EXP offers a good solution in situations where there is a simultaneous demand for cooling and hot water, and particularly in a building where there is significant potential for internal heat recovery.’
