Hospital pipes and ducts respond to Kingspan treatment

Kingspan
Large quantities of Kingspan pipe and duct insulation have been used to provide energy-efficient building services in Russell’s Hall Hospital in Dudley.
Over 40 000 m (linear) of Kingspan rigid phenolic Kooltherm pipe insulation and 3000 m2 of Kooltherm duct insulation have been installed in the multi-million redevelopment of Russell’s Hospital in Dudley. The project is part of a £160 million drive to make healthcare facilities in the area some of the most technologically advanced in the country. It involved refurbishment and new construction, including a state-of-the-art maternity unit. The Kingspan products were selection by insulation sub-contractor Western Thermal, which also installed Kooltherm insulated pipe-support inserts. Tony Shirt, regional marketing manager with contractor Haden Young, says, ‘Phenolic insulation was used for the pipe and duct work because of its excellent thermal properties, which makes it relatively thin for a given insulation value. The insulated pipe-support inserts provide continuity of insulation and consistent thickness, so the external diameter of insulated pipe is the same over pipe and bracket.
