Plastic pipe brings new life to district heating

The lifecycle and environmental benefits of pre-insulated polybutene pipe technology were the main reasons for it replacing legacy steel pipe in a district-heating scheme in Wandsworth. A total of 1140 m of the pipe was supplied by Flexenergy after the steel network was coming to the end of its useful life.
The new pre-insulated pipe will improve thermal efficiency. It is also recyclable and has a longer life than steel. The system helps meet the heating and hot-water needs of over 160 households.
Sandy Fairley, sales director with Flexenergy, says, Many contractors are now choosing our fully welded, all-plastic, corrosion-free pipework for district-heating schemes. It can handle flow temperatures of 70°C for an estimated 98 years.’
