Nearly Zero will be the goal

Speaking at this year’s ICOM Spring Conference, CIBSE technical director, Hywel Davies, highlighted nearly zero energy buildings (NZEBs) as an important area for construction professionals to be aware of in the next few years.

“The Energy Performance of Buildings Directive requires all new buildings to be nearly zero energy by the end of 2020,” said Davies. “We are committed to NZEBs, because they are already in UK legislation.”

According to Davies, who has been heavily involved in the EPBD and other legislation for many years, the next iteration of Part L will have to take the UK to NZEBs by the start of 2021.
