Koolduct ductwork leads in medical research

Air distribution in this spectacular new medical building at the Institute of Cell and Molecular Science (ICMS) at Barts and The London, Queen Mary’s School of Medicine and Dentistry is provided using Kingspan’s pre-insulated Koolduct system. The specification of Koolduct arose from the challenges posed to consultant WSP. They include a number of pods in the shape of a cloud, a giant orange cell and a spiky object that provide spaces for meetings and seminars. These are suspended so that they appear to float over open-plan laboratories and work spaces that can accommodate up to 400 medical researchers. The laboratories have an extremely high level of mechanical and electrical requirements. A separate vertical plantroom over four floors provides the heart of the M&E operation. Koolduct pre-insulated ductwork was installed in all the main risers and runs, helping solve the complexity and depth of service runs required. This ductwork can be installed in a single fix in areas where space limitations would prevent conventional ductwork being lagged. Queen Mary is one of the largest colleges in the University of London and has over 10 000 undergraduate and postgraduate students.
