Sheltered accommodation group moves towards CHP

This DACHS mini-CHP unit installed as part of a boiler-house refurbishment acts as the lead boiler for heating and provides 3-phase electricity.

Gas-fired CHP has been installed as art of the refurbishment of the boiler house serving sheltered accommodation in Bradford. Shuttleworth House is run by Bradford Community Housing Trust. It is around 30 years old and consists of 43 self-contained flats, a communal lounge, dining room and laundry room. The DACHS mini-CHP from Baxi Technologies was specified to provided environmentally friendly electricity to the communal areas and heat throughout the property. It produces 12 kW of heat and 5.5 kW of 3-phase electricity, reducing the amount needed from the grid and displacing fuel used by other heating appliances. Such installations typically reduce carbon emissions by about 30%. At Shuttleworth House, an exhaust condenser maximises thermal output and improves overall fuel efficiency by about 6%. The DACHS acts as the lead heating appliance and is support by four condensing boilers, each rated at 120 kW. Les Thorpe, heating of investment and regeneration at Bradford Community Housing Trust, says, ‘The DACHs is the first installation of CHP within our property portfolio. It is hoped it will provide us with a working example of how this type of low-carbon technology can be utilised across our entire housing stock.’
