Royal Preston Hospital refurbishes with Cylon

The 50 buildings on the site of Royal Preston Hospital are now under the control of a Cylon building-management system.

The progressive replacement of building-management systems at Royal Preston Hospital is making possible the effective implementation of the energy-management policy of a site with an energy bill of £3.4 million. The main system is now based on Cylon Unitron equipment installed by Nobbs & Jones, a Cylon-accredited installer. It controls the boiler plant, ventilation systems and radiant-heating panels. There are 5000 points in 50 buildings with an area of nearly 115 000 m2. Building use is varied and includes state-of-the-art delivery suites and operating theatres requiring accurate control. Royal Preston Hospital is part of Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. It has 1000 beds and serves over 1.2 million patients a year. The BMS is linked by a hospital-wide Ethernet network. The trust’s local clinics are linked to the main hospital buildings using a wide-area network. The whole system is managed from three supervisors in the estates office on the same Ethernet network. Energy-saving measures include occupancy sensors to reduce heating when rooms are not in use.
