ICS building-management system performs at Wembley Arena
The building-management system for the refurbished Wembley Arena was designed and installed by Integrated Control Systems.
As part of the £35 million refurbishment of Wembley Arena, Integrated Control Systems has completed a £190 000 controls contract. ICS designed and installed a building-management system to control the vast auditorium, hospitality areas, dressing rooms, promoter’s offices, entrance foyer, bars, restaurants and food outlets. The front-end terminal gives operators the flexibility to optimise zone heating and cooling in conjunction with local operator panels, depending on events in the arena. Controls can be over-ridden for extended use and switched off in occupied areas when the auditorium is not in use. The BMS also logs data and hours run and monitors limit value. The central supervisor includes a full suite of graphics. Plant controlled by the BMS includes 14 existing roof-mounted packaged air-conditioning units serving the auditorium. The is an isolation damper on each one. A further four packaged air-conditioning units were installed to serve the auditorium. They have their own controls but are monitored by the BMS for fan run, compressor and damper status, and the state of the filters. 14 packaged AHUs serving concourse kiosks are monitored and controlled by the BMS, as are boilers, LPHW systems and an extensive network of supply and extract fans. John Reid, managing director of ICS, says, ‘The physical size of the building was not as great a problem as the logistics associated with the programming and planning of the contract. We were always conscious of the fact that thousands of people had booked to see Depeche Monde at the re-opening concert, so there was absolutely no question of us — or any other contractor — running late.’ The contract was awarded by Meica Services. Consulting engineers were Hilson Moran.
