Vaillant brings solar energy to Flat Holm Island

Solar panels forming part of Vaillant systems for generating domestic hot water have been installed on two building on a small island in the middle of the Bristol Channel

Domestic hot water for buildings on the island of Flat Holm in the middle of the Bristol Channel five miles from Cardiff is provided by Vaillant systems using solar panels. The island received the first ever radio message across water sent by Marconi in 1897. Solar Thermal installed one solar array with 12 panels on the roof of the listed Foghorn Keeper’s Cottage and another with 16 panels on the farmhouse, which is used as the island’s visitor centre. Paul Brimble, engineer and director of Solar Thermal, says, ‘Cardiff City Council, which runs Flat Holm Island, has implemented a sustainability drive. For example, they plan to put a big wind turbine onto the island, and they already harvest rainwater. That is why they decided to install environmentally friendly heating technology on the island, including Vaillant’s solar domestic-hot-water system.’
