Moeller distributes power in student flats in Cardiff

Moeller’s capability to adapt standard equipment to meet special needs was a contributory factor to the use of its low-voltage electrical distribution equipment for one of the tallest buildings in Wales. Ty Pont Haearn is a 21-storey purpose-built student accommodation block in Cardiff. It is owned and managed the student accommodation and hospitality company Unite and will accommodate around 750 students. Moeller equipment performs all distribution and protection functions and was specified and installed by MITIE Engineering Services (Cardiff) working for main contractor Carillion. The modular switchboard is a fully type-tested assembly with Form 4, Type 2 separation in line with the requirements of BS EN 60439-1 and a fault rating of 50 kA for a second — so the highest levels of operational safety under all conditions are guaranteed. Outgoing circuits of the switchboard provide feed via the main rises to a 250 A, 3-phase mini panel board accommodated in a riser cupboard on each floor. These panel boards supply Type A MCB distribution boards in each student flat. They were customised by Moeller to incorporate the landlord’s metering system and a combination of RCBOs and MCBs to provide tamper-proof for all circuits in the room. Moeller was involved from the earliest stages of the project to develop a technically attractive concept and a safe, efficient final design. MITIE is now working on the design for another Unite student-accommodation building in Bristol and is proposing to use Moeller distribution equipment.
