Cast-iron replacement boilers reduce energy consumption

Direct replacements for cast-iron boilers from Hamworthy’s Purewell VariHeat range are significantly reducing energy consumption at the University of the West of England.
Boilers at the University of the West of England in Bristol are being replaced with Hamworthy Purewell VariHeat condensing boilers with cast-iron sections as part of a programme of upgrading plantrooms. Four of six plantrooms have been upgraded — and energy savings are already apparent. Richard Snelgrove, mechanical engineer with UWE, says, ‘The previous boilers were due for replacement, and we made the decision to replace them with condensing boilers with cast-iron sections. We also wanted fully modulating capabilities, so Hamworthy’s Purewell VariHeat boilers met our requirements perfectly. The heating systems have already shown significant energy savings compared to last year, and we expect the savings to grow.’ Purewell VariHeat boilers have been designed as a direct replacement for traditional cast-iron atmospheric boilers. They retain all the benefits, but have 50% higher output and exceptional seasonal efficiencies. A downward firing premix burner keeps the burner clear of condensate, and a secondary heat exchanger in the base of the boiler maximises heat recovery from flue gases. The are five models in the condensing range with outputs ranging from 70 to 180 kW.
