Turning a hotel into a dream Abode

Energy-efficient air conditioning for the latest Abode hotel in the UK, in Glasgow, is provided by a Mitsubishi Electric City Multi system with units in bedrooms activated by the door entry system. Units are thus only switched on when a guest enters the room. The hotel reception can also program individual rooms to ensure that each is set to a suitable temperature during the hot or cold months of the year so they are ready for a new guest without using energy unnecessarily. The hotel has 60 luxurious bedrooms and is a refurbishment of an Edwardian building. Nick Halliday of Abode explains, ‘Although creature comfort is an absolute must for our guest, we are also aware of the rising costs of energy and the need to cut down on wastage. We needed an air-conditioning system that would not only be ready as soon as guests arrived but also one that allows us to fully control energy usage and ensure that we aren’t needlessly heating or cooling empty rooms. Thornley & Lumb specified four City Multi outdoor units linked to 76 indoor fan-coil units throughout the hotel. They were installed by Turn Key Air Conditioning. The hotel continued to operate throughout the refurbishment, closing one floor at a time. It was also important not to disturb guests and to ensure that the installation was sympathetic to the ornate style of the hotel, parts of which are listed.
