Durapipe installed at UCL
Durapipe plastic pipework systems have been installed as part of a major refurbishment of the Darwin Building of University College London. Vulcathene, ABS and Friatherm pipework were used to modernise the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology. The Vulcathene system was specified to replace cast-iron pipework for laboratory drainage. Michael Melluish of building-services consultant MG Partnership says, ‘We needed to ensure that the product we installed could cope with the mix of waste and chemicals that it would be exposed to on a daily basis, so the corrosion-resistant Vulcathene was an excellent option.’ The Vulcathene system includes laboratory bench items such as wastes, sinks and drip cups, anti-siphon traps and expansion joints. ABS pipework replaced a chilled-water riser and increased its capacity to cater for the newly refurbished part of the building. Friatherm was installed for all domestic services at the request of UCL, which has used this product in other campus buildings. The systems were installed by LJJ Contractors.
