Green light for new Heathrow terminal

Subject to completion of a legal agreement, the London Borough of Hillingdon and the Mayor of London have agreed to grant planning permission for the Heathrow East terminal. It will not increase capacity, but will replace Terminals 1 and 2. Phase 1 could be open as early as 2012, in time for the London Olympics. The new terminal will cut carbon-dioxide emissions by 40% compared to the buildings it will replace. Key energy strategies include on-site combined cooling, heating and power (CCHP) and on-site renewable energy such as biomass gasification and photo-voltaic solar panels.
