Hospital exploits the benefits of natural daylighting

Turning down the Sun — daylight introduced into day-care rooms in a London private hospital can be controlled by patients using a remote controller.

A north London private hospital has converted unused interior space into four additional day-care rooms, each illuminated by Solatube daylighting systems from SolaLighting and incorporating a means of reducing lighting levels as required. The systems capture daylight at roof level and direct it into the rooms below. In converting the previously unused interior space to additional day-car rooms, Nuffield Hospital North London, wanted to supply them with natural light and give patients the capability of controlling lighting levels using a remote controller. Each room is served by a 530 mm 21-C daylighting system, and the amount of light allowed into the room is controlled by a variable-position butterfly baffle that fits into the tube and is controlled by a low-voltage pressure switch. A transition box connects the circular tubes to a 600 mm-square diffuser to fit neatly into a commercial suspended-ceiling grid.
