Sun shines on MoD establishment

Vaillant’s solar domestic-hot-water system has been installed to serve two shower facilities at a Ministry of Defence Establishment in Dorset. They were installed by Southern Pipe Services, whose Dave Dodd says, ‘We use Vaillant products a lot and have completed several solar installation using their system.’ Southern Pipework installed four auroTHERM VFK 900 flat-plate solar collectors, two for each building. An ecoTEC plus 637 system boiler was also installed, along with a 300 litre twin-coil auroSTOR unvented solar hot water cylinder. An old gas water heater has been replaced. Commenting on the specification, Bob Kneale of Debut Services (South West) says, ‘Following Dave Dodd’s suggestion to replace the old gas water heater with a new boiler and solar panels, we performed quite a thorough payback analysis on the solar option versus a standard installation. I realised it was actually much more cost effective than I expected, and we took his recommendations to select the Vaillant solar domestic-hot-water system in both shower houses.’ Such solar DHW systems can provide 50 to 60% of the annual requirements of domestic hot water.
