Birchall fits out UK’s largest modular healthcare scheme

Building-engineering provider Birchall has installed the mechanical services for the largest modular healthcare scheme in the UK. The Acute Admissions Unit at Watford General Hospital has been built using 142 steel-framed modules. Birchall was commissioned by off-site specialist Yorkon and electrical contractor Connect 2 to install the services for main contractor Medicinq Osborne as part of a £25 million hospital improvement project. Reducing the construction programme time by around 50%, the modules were craned into position with about 40% of pipework, plumbing and electrical services having been installed off site. Chris Langley, operations manager at Yorkon for the project, says, ‘By manufacturing the building off-site, we were able to bring together an integrated design team that could work together with maximum efficiency. Birchall has been a key element of that team, and their professionalism has ensure the success of this ground-breaking project.
