RS trials replacement LED lighting

Dialight LED downlighters are being trialled by RS Components as replacements for halogen downlighters.

Distributor RS Components has begun a trial installation of Dialight LED downlighters in its Corby head office. Over a hundred Dialight HL 16 retro-fit LED units are replacing MR 16 halogen downlighters in the main corridor that leads to all the meeting rooms. The HL 16 fittings have three LEDs with heatsink housing and are similar in size to MR 16 units. They use only 3.6 W compared with 50 W for the halogen units. Their 50 000 h life compared with 2000 h for halogen will reduce maintenance costs. Semiconductor-based LEDs can be switched on and off frequently and dimmed, so their effective life is as much as 10 years. Less heat is generated to be removed by the air conditioning. Doug Ollett, plant and services technician with RS Components, specified the LED fittings. He says, ‘People in the office are very happy with them. They say they like the nice bluey-white light — it’s no so harsh as the halogens and less strain on the eyes. ‘I am expecting that these LED installations will pay for themselves in 20 months, so I would like to see them replace all our halogens in the long term.’ These LED fittings do not contain mercury or other hazardous material, so they are safe and easy to recycle. They are available for next-day delivery through RS Components.
