Commercial boilers show growth in sales
Sales of commercial boilers, above 44 kW, have shown an 8% growth in annual sales to exceed 20 000 units, reports the ICOM Energy Association. This increase continues the trend of the previous year and is attributed to additional workload during 2008. The proportion of condensing boilers is now just under 70% of total sales. The proportion taken by wall-hung boilers is now 49%. Ken Percival, chairman of ICOM’s UK commercial boiler group, comments, ‘The penetration of condensing boilers in the commercial sector continues the rising trend. However, we consider it likely that the percentage will level off at 80% because not all existing buildings are suitable for condensing boilers. Biomass boilers have just started to register on the sales charts — at 0.5% of boiler sales. Cast-iron boilers are now just 28% of the commercial market. Atmospheric gas boilers are the largest sector within cast iron, but their sales have declined a further 15% in the last year. The smaller sector of pressure-jet cast-iron boilers has stabilised. Sales of cast-iron pressure-jet oil boilers fell a further 17%, following 11% last year — reflecting market concerns about the massive peak in the price of oil.
