Hilson Moran scoops BCO innovation award

Hilson Moran
This project in the City of London has won for Hilson Moran a British Council for Offices innovation award.
As building-services engineers for 5 Aldermanbury Square in the City of London, Hilson Moran won two categories in the British Council for Offices awards. They were the national award and the London regional award in the category for commercial workplace buildings. This building was one of the first large commercial developments to be assessed under Part L of the 2002 Building Regulations, which were only six months away when this building was designed. A key challenge for Hilson Moran was to anticipate the implications of the changes at times of uncertainty. As part of assessing the environmental performance of the building, advanced dynamic thermal modelling of the integrated structure and facade design was carried out — one of the most complex aspects of the project. A computational 3D model constructed by Hilson Moran was used to evaluate several designs. The integrated structural and M&E solution resulted in key services contained in cores located to the north and south sides of the floor plates to increase flexibility in floor layouts. To free up more office space at the top of the building, most of the plant is in the basement.
