Tackling CO2 issues

Dave Hampton’s concerns about the way we continue to pump carbon dioxide into the atmosphere (click article on the navbar to the left; it is the first article) can, as he says, be believed or disbelieved — but the issue will not go away just because it is ignored. With such a high proportion of energy consumption being accounted for by buildings, they are both the problem and the opportunity for solutions. Looking elsewhere in this issue of Modern Building Services provides a host of pointers on how carbon-dioxide emissions can be reduced. On page five is the fact that pumps account for 20% of world energy consumption. On page 21 is a discussion of how variable speed pumps can reduce pumping energy in chilled-water systems by over 65%. And on page 20, Julian Miller sets about the task of controlling chillers properly. Peruse the pages of this issue and start thinking.
