New BREEAM energy standards defined for schools

School-standards Minister David Miliband has welcomed the addition of a BREEAM standard for schools to BRE’s portfolio of environmental assessments. The scheme will help schools and local-educational authorities set environmental targets for new and refurbished buildings and help designers improve the environmental of school buildings. Mr Miliband said, ‘The Government is linking the largest schools capital-investment programme since the Victorian era with education reform to provide environmental performance of our schools and realising the many benefits of more sustainable buildings. We are therefore delighted that the new BREEAM is ready to run. The development of BREEAM Schools was funded by the Department for Education & Science. It replaces the Schools Environmental Assessment Method, published in 1995.
