Honeywell takes control to achieve impressive energy performance

Carbon-dioxide emissions from the Merseyside Centre in Bootle are half of Carbon Trust targets, according to the Honeywell system that controls and monitors building performance.

Carbon-dioxide emissions from the Merseyside Centre at Bootle, opened in 2006, are 50% below the recommended levels of Carbon Trust good practice, according to monitored data from the Honeywell Building Solutions. Carbon-dioxide emissions over an 11-month period were 131 kg/m2.

Since Kajima Partnership opened the centre, Honeywell Building Solutions has designed and maintained an intelligent building system that brings together natural resources and advanced technologies to maximise energy and cost savings. The 30 000 m2 facility contains 3- and 4-storey blocks and a drum-shaped building, all containing offices, which connect to a central atrium.

Honeywell installed its Enterprise Buildings Integrator with Energy Manager software to control the building-management systems and monitor energy consumption. The system is integrated with eco-friendly features that included mixed-mode ventilation, rainwater harvesting, solar shading and ammonia chillers.

Overall energy costs for the 11 months were also substantially lower than Carbon Trust guidelines — at about £16 per square metre per month, £20 less than good practice indicators and equivalent to a saving of £7.2 million over the year.
