Refurbishing VAV boxes reduces energy usage

Significant energy savings can be made by refurbishing VAV boxes that have mechanical dampers with a replacement valve/damper from Trox.

Mechanical dampers typically require a pressure of 200 Pa to operate them, compared with a typical 20 Pa for the Trox valve/damper.

Such a 180 Pa reduction in downstream pressure in a building of, say, 40 000 m2 with an airflow of 15 l/s/m2 would use 308 000 kWh less electricity a year, equivalent to over 132 t of carbon dioxide.

Replacing old mechanisms also improves the accuracy of airflow control, with a further benefit to energy consumption.

BSRIA statistics and Trox’s own records indicate that there are over a million VAV boxes installed and operating in the UK, most of them consuming far more energy than necessary. Trox offers a complete upgrading service for old VAV nits, from site survey to on-site refurbishment.
