Trace heating protects dormant central-heating systems

Tyco Thermal Controls

Tyco Thermal Controls has introduced a Raychem self-regulating electric heating cable to provide frost protection for dormant central-heating systems. They can withstand the high temperatures of active systems and eliminate the need to drain the whole system if the property is to be unoccupied for long periods during the Winter — such as schools, holiday homes and resorts.

A key requirement for this application is to provide just the heat required and only when needed. This cable can have single circuit length of 180 m and deliver 10 W/m at 5°C, sufficient to provide frost protection on pipework up to 108 mm with sufficient insulation.

Jonathan Jones, product manager at Tyco Thermal Controls, comments, ‘Customer feedback has made us aware that this seemingly niche application is a more common problem than one might have expected, and Tyco Thermal Controls has developed a special heating cable with the key attributes required to offer an application-specific solution.’
