CIBSE membership swells to record level

Membership of CIBSE has swelled by nearly 2000 since the beginning of 2004 — taking the membership to a record high of over 17 000. There has been growth in both UK and overseas membership, with overseas representing 25% of total membership. The expansion is partly due to recent changes enabling CIBSE to control its own admission criteria for the qualified grades of member, associate and licentiate independently of the Engineering Council UK. Membership continues to be based on CIBSE’s tried-and-tested competence standards for each grade, but the institution can now attract new corporate members who are qualified and experienced in building services but cannot meet the Engineering Council’s specific academic requirements. New members have been attracted by benefits such as discounts of up to 50% on technical publications, substantially reduced prices for conferences and seminars, access to regional and special-interest groups, and professional recognition for members in qualified grades. CIBSE president Graham Manly stresses that the belief that CIBSE is for consulting engineers is a myth. ‘CIBSE is for the whole engineering sector’, he says. ‘We are inclusive and welcome all people involved in servicing buildings.’ Prospective members are invited to visit www.cibse.org/membership, where they can join online as affiliates, the first stage on their professional development in building services.
