Chillers use oil-free compressors

Magnetic bearings in the centrifugal compressors of TECS chillers from Powermaster eliminate the need for oil.

Oil-free centrifugal chillers using R134a and with cooling capacities from 210 to 2400 kW have been launched by Powermaster. TECS chillers are available as both air-cooled and water-cooled units. At the heart of these chillers is a new approach to compressor design. The mini-centrifugal, oil-free compressor incorporates a high-efficiency, inverter-driven motor and magnetic bearings. Combined with precise control of the water temperature leaving the evaporator and an optimised cooling circuit, TECS chillers can achieve 40% higher efficiency at part load than chillers with scroll or screw compressors and 10% higher at full load. The compressor has only one moving part — the shaft. Magnetic bearings suspend this shaft in air and frictionless. An asymmetric evaporator optimises cooling performance. There is no vibration, even on start up, so these compressors are very quiet. Under standard Eurovent conditions, a 900 kW air-cooled water chiller has a sound output of 68 dB(A) at a metre.
