Andrews keeps senior service in hot water

Energy-efficient hot water for the Royal Navy training establishment in Cornwall is provided by decentralised equipment supplied by Andrews Water Heaters.

As part of a major refurbishment at HMS Raleigh, the Royal Navy’s premier training establishment in Cornwall, the domestic-hot-water load has been separated from the heating load and decentralised. This has been achieved using direct-fired water heaters to increase energy efficiency and reduce heat losses from long pipe runs.

A total of 10 ECOflow gas-fired condensing storage water heaters were supplied by Andrews Water Heaters for the project. They have been installed in six buildings, including medical and dental facilities, accommodation, catering and administrative blocks.

Each building has its own plant room, and it was important for consulting engineers Wessex Design to select water heaters with a small footprint and which could support long flue runs in some of the plant rooms.

Another requirement was for all plant to be from one manufacturer and, ideally, all from the same range to simplify maintenance.

Eight water heaters with a storage capacity of 230 l were installed, two with a recovery rate of 600 l/h through a temperature rise of 50 K and two with a recovery rate of 960 l/h. Two heaters with a storage capacity of 380 l and recovery rate of 1220 l/h were also installed. They were all connected to existing pipework, with horizontal balanced flues, and commissioned by Lorne Stewart.
