Friatherm pumps life into young plants at nursery

Friatherm plastic pipework has been installed to replace steel in a system that heats the plant beds.

To overcome the problem of corrosion of steel pipework restricting flow to plants in a horticultural nursery, Friatherm plastic pipework has been installed. Toon Nurseries in south-west Derby supplies up to four million young plants to the trade industry each year. The centre was refurbishing the pipework system used to supply its thermabeds with hot water.

Friatherm was selected as the ideal solution and was specified in sizes from 63 to 300 mm. It carries water at up to 50°C to the thermabeds, which heat the plant beds to a consistent 20°C.

Richard Toon, managing director of Toon Nurseries, said, ‘The quality of the Friatherm pipework has offered a much more efficient system compared to the metal products we have previously used, offering a 50-year working life, while the speed of installation and the fact that no power source or hot works are needed means that Friatherm offered significant cost savings over other metal pipework solutions.’
