Nationwide replaces R22 systems with minimal disruption

Mitsubishi Electric, R22 replacement, air conditioning

The replacement of R22 air-conditioning systems with R410A units in several retail branches of Nationwide Building Society has been achieved while keeping existing piping and wiring. R22 gas is being phased out because it has ozone-depletion potential, and companies such as Nationwide need to find ways of replacing these systems whilst minimising branch disruption and costs.

The work was carried out by Holborn Building Services working with Vinci Facilities, the facilities-management provide for Nationwide’s retail branch network as part an ongoing programme of energy-saving initiatives and equipment upgrade using equipment selected from Mitsubishi Electric’s Replace range.

Tim Smith, project manager with Vinci Facilities explains, ‘In most cases, Holborn has only had to replace the outdoor and indoor units and has been able to keep all the existing piping and wiring.

‘This has meant business as usual inside the branch as we have been able to minimise disruption to branch staff and also retain the integrity of existing decoration and wall finishes.’

All the Mitsubishi equipment installed by Holborn qualifies for Enhanced Capital Allowances. Holborn can also offer extended warranties as an accredited installer for Mitsubishi Electric.

To establish what was needed for each branch, Holborn carried out surveys using an audit tool from Mitsubishi to produce an energy/carbon-reduction assessment and highlight ways of reducing energy use. These assessments can be used as a basis for applying for interest-free funding from the Carbon Trust for new equipment.
