Chillers set new efficiency standard in Scotland

Carrier Aquasnap water-cooled chillers with potential COPs of over six have been used to replace the air-conditioning system at Kemnay Academy, a comprehensive school in Aberdeenshire. This is the first application of these chillers in Scotland. The two chillers are coupled with air-handling units and two of the first Carrier Fincoil roof-mounted dry coolers to be fitted to such a system in the UK. The school began life with an air-conditioning system for cooling and boilers for heating because of its unusual design and layout. The 3-storey hexagonal block is constructed from concrete and glass. Three sides are more-or-less south facing, so there is considerable heat gain all year round. None of the inner group of classrooms, laboratories, libraries etc. has windows. The two 150 kW chillers had to be installed in the existing rooftop plant room, so the small footprint and energy efficiency were important features. They have Carrier ProDialog control to enable them to operate at optimum load and control the dry coolers without additional costly control systems.
