SE Controls reaches higher in Liverpool

Natural smoke ventilation in this new 42-storey building in Liverpool is provided by a system controlled by SE Controls’ OSO system.
A networked smoke-ventilation system for the tallest residential building in the north-west of England has been designed and installed by SE Controls. Beetham Tower on Liverpool’s changing waterfront is a 29-storey building. It includes a 133-apartment block, a 4/5-star Radisson SAS hotel and a new office block. SE Controls, working with the M&E contractor, installed its OSO control system on each floor of the building. They are situated in the common corridors serving the apartments. The louvres have spring-operated actuators powered by the OSO system, interfaced with the building’s fire-alarm system. When the louvres are open, smoke is dispersed from the floor to atmosphere via a vertical smoke shaft. Such natural smoke ventilation is more cost effective and easier to maintain than mechanical extract systems. The networked system of individual controllers on each floor has delivered significant savings in cabling costs. Each OSO control system has 42 h of battery backup and an over-ride switch for firemen. Beetham Tower was designed by architects Aeda for developer Beetham and built by contractor Carillion.
