Morrisons targets 30% carbon cut

Morrisons aims to reduce its total operational carbon footprint by 30% by 2020 (from a 2005 baseline). It aims to achieve this despite the new stores, manufacturing and distribution centres that it continues to build.

Among its carbon-reduction projects are:

• Voltage optimisation – reducing incoming voltage to a lower value can save up to 7% of total store energy demand. Morrisons is trialling this in 50 sites, aiming to save around 6,300 tonnes of CO2e, with a view to rolling this out across its entire estate.

• Ventilation control – by balancing the amount of air being brought into stores and the amount of CO2e produced by its occupants, it is estimated it will save 12,200 tonnes of CO2e on electricity alone, with additional savings made on the gas used to heat the incoming air.

• Peterborough Stanground concept store (due for completion this year) will be its latest ‘eco-store’ and will trial technologies including an air-source pump for heating, a fully natural-refrigerant refrigeration system, solar panels and full-LED lighting.

• LED lighting on chilled display cabinets — installing low-power display lighting into cabinets will give Morrisons savings of 11,400 tonnes of CO2e.
