Radiant heating transforms hangar at RAF base

Comfort and fuel economy have both been massively improved following the replacement of warm-air-heating in an aircraft hangar at RAF Brize Norton. Base Hangar’s gas bill in 2012 was £800 000 a year. The installation of an AmbiRad Nor-Ray-Vac continuous-tube radiant heating system has reduced fuel costs by 75%.

The new system can heat the entire hangar or specific areas as and when necessary. The hangar could be in use 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The system had previously been installed in two other hangars at RAF Brize Norton — the air-tanker hangar and C130J Hanger.

David Craven, chief technician at RAF Brize Norton and Base Hangar operations manager, says, ‘Following the installation of the new radiant heating system into Base Hangar, the complexion of the environment has changed significantly. The improved heating and a programme of refurbishment has transformed Base Hangar into a more welcoming and pleasant working environment for the different users of the facility.’
