Staying in shape with Kingspan KoolDuct

Faced with the installation challenges presented by castellated beams in phase 2 of Newry Leisure Centre in Northern Ireland, Kingspan KoolDuct delivery partner cg3Systems used this ductwork system to achieve a millimetre-perfect HVAC fit-out. This latest addition to Newry Leisure Centre includes 8-court and 4-court sports halls, handball and squash courts, dry changing facilities, fitness suite, soft-play and crèche areas, cafe and other facilities.

KoolDuct systems and circular ductwork formed from KoolDuct panels are pre-insulated , eliminating the time-consuming lagging stage associated with steel ductwork and potentially saving as much as 200 mm ceiling-void space in a single dimension. The space-saving benefit was a key consideration on this project to enable ductwork to pass through the castellated beams (right-hand side of photograph).

Rori Millar, BIM and co-ordination manager explains. ‘Due to the castellated beams, it was essential that the quantities of ductwork were almost millimetre perfect. This required careful clash detection implementation, measurement and coordination.

‘The 3D modelling as part of the BIM process at pre-site stage, in addition to guidance and support from Kingspan’s technical team, ensured the ductwork systems would fit properly.

‘Onsite, it was installed exactly in accordance with the 3D models, and included many offsets and pieces which simply wouldn’t have been possible with sheet-metal type ductwork.’
