The Mayor of London has launched a £3.6m programme to improve energy efficiency in social housing across the capital, including replacing heating systems.

Sadiq Khan said the Retrofit Accelerator for Homes programme would help the city achieve its carbon neutral target by 2030 by helping people improve heating system; speed up the adoption of renewables – particularly heat pumps and solar – and improve building fabric.

Local authorities and housing associations will also be able to access expert advice and guidance on large-scale energy efficiency projects.

“London’s ageing and energy-inefficient homes are responsible for around one third of the capital’s greenhouse gas emissions and urgently need to be refitted,” said Khan.

The London Assembly calculates the cost of residential energy in the capital at £3.5 billion per annum. By focusing on retrofitting social housing, improvements can be made to whole blocks or streets of houses “quickly and efficiently, driving down the cost of installation and materials, and directly tackling fuel poverty”, it added.
