First-time installer tackles complex KNX automation job

Two members of the KNX UK Association worked closely together to deliver a challenging home-automation project at a home with an equine centre in the Scottish Borders. The project demonstrates how an electrical contractor in the early stages of using KNX can offer clients all the lifestyle and energy-saving benefits of the technology.

This was the first KNX project for Beasons of Dolphinton, Peebleshire, which recently achieved KNX Partner status following accredited training with KNX Consultants and Ivory Egg.

With the home owner wanting the flexibility to extend the initial system into an adjoining cottage and into an equine centre and garage, the project was potentially complex. Beasons therefore called upon the expertise of KNX Consultants.

Ben Lewis of KNX Consultants explains, ‘The service we offer can be used by any installer. We can help them in their initial KNX projects and build their confidence in implementing KNX. We have the expertise that will enable an installer to pitch for a new KNX project or to fulfil a contract.’

As work was completed on site, KNX Consultants undertook commissioning remotely via the Internet.

In the barn conversion, KNX controls lighting, heating and the motorised operation of the rooflights to provide automated ventilation.

The integration of the intruder alarm system enables its PIR motion detectors and timers to be used in the control of heating and lighting.

The audio-visual system has also been integrated via the user interface.

The system is operated via wall-mounted touch panels.
