Wireless sensors control renovated office building

Wireless sensors from Sontay play a key role in controlling temperature in the refurbished 1 Kingsway in London.

Controlling the energy-efficient operation and comfort of the renovated 1 Kingsway in London is a Sontay SonNet wireless sensor system. Completely rebuilt behind the original 1920 Portland-stone facade, the building has nearly 10 000 m2 of Grade A sustainable office space and seven high-specification apartments. It has achieved a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating.

Keeping the original aspects of the building made a wireless system the ideal choice. It was installed by Matrix, a nationwide controls company.

Following a detailed site survey, supported by Sontay’s field representative, Matrix proved that the equipment would work correctly prior to installation. The project comprised 29 routers, eight receivers and 276 room-temperature sensors.

Sensor operation is based on 2.4 GHz licence-free radio technology.

The SonNet radio receiver converts data received from the sensors to analogue outputs that are compatible with most control systems. For maximum reliability, operation and battery life, the sensors run a self-healing tree operation.
