Honeywell expertise manages tricky chiller replacement

The UK refrigeration services business of Honeywell has management the replacement of chiller plant on the roof of a Unilever R&D facility at Colworth Science Park in Bedfordshire. There were previously three chillers on the roof, located above three central atria that cannot be accessed from office and laboratories in the building below. They used R22 and had become unserviceable over time. To remove the chillers, Honeywell organised a crane lift requiring radio communication between the beadsman and crane operators. Specialist lifting equipment and radio communication was essential because there was only 10 cm of clearance between the chillers and the wall cladding of the building. New pipework for the new water-pipe flanges was fitted in preparation for the new chillers and mains electrical power cabling installed. Two Carrier Aquasnap R410A chillers, each with a cooling capacity of 400 kW, were installed. Their efficiency will provide Unilever with significant energy and cost savings over their life. Removal of the old chillers through to final commissioning of the new chillers and project handover took just seven days.
